Sherif El Morsi is a filmmaker based in Cairo, Egypt where he was born and raised. His journey as an artist began in 2001 as a modern dancer. This evolved into performance art and then eventually he moved on to directing. An accomplished and award winning photographer, he searched for a more permanent media for his art. As a director of film he found his niche and began to create short documentary films that expresses his personal emotions as well as his concerns of the global situation. He looks at the creative process as a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts, using all types of media and art to convey his message. His work is based on feeling rather than narrative. Ever searching for new roads and experiences, he stays curious and open, with a child-like view of the world…always keeping his work fresh and exhilarating.

by the director's own relation to downtown Cairo and some of its lived and imaginary characters. It has a literal backbone: a path through 21 defined spots. يمكننا أن نري في الصورة ان السيارات لم تعد تتخذ من الجانبين فقط مكانا لركن السيارات في الشوارع ، لقد كان هذا في الماضي، نحن الآن في العصر المصري الحديث ولابد ان نتماشي مع الوضع ,
وهذا هو الشيء الوحيد الذي يتشاركة الاغنياء والفقراء معا" الوضع " وبالنسبة لوضعي أنا فقد إنتظرت في هذا الشارع لمدة حوالي ٤٥ دقيقة بلا أي داعي لأنني ركنت سيارتي في أحد الجانبين أمام بيتي وعندما سألت السايس " الرجل المسئول عن السيارات " فـ أجابني وكأنني ليس لي أي حق في أن أرفض أو أغضب فـالدنيا كلها بتعمل كدة (هو دة رأية )
وعرفت منه في وسط الكلام إن أصحاب السيارات ألي ركنة غلط مجموعة من الأطباء والمحامين وشركات السياحة
فـ حطيت الجزمة في بُقي ورجعت للعربية مستني تعليمات الباشا الجديد لحد ما فرجت كالعادة ..

Land of contrasts: EC Delegation in Egypt launches photo competition

Amateur photographers are being called to capture a land of contrasts in a competition organized for the second year by the Delegation of the European Commission in Cairo, with a €1,000 prize on offer for the winner.

The theme of the 2009 edition of the competition is ‘Egypt: Land of contrasts’. A Delegation press release said entries would “need to reflect the various aspects of life in Egypt in all their diversity: the old and the new, the classic and the contemporary, the rich and the poor, the traditional and the trendy…”

All amateur photographers living in Egypt are invited to participate. A panel of eminent photographers and artists will judge the entries, and prizes will be awarded to the two best photos - €1,000 for the winner and an SLR digital camera for the runner-up. The best 30 photos chosen by the panel will be exhibited in December at a Cairo gallery. A catalogue of these photos will also be printed, and the

Delegation will choose 12 photos to include in its 2010 calendar.

Synopsis
A real case, that happened, and is still happening in our society,
as well as many other societies
Most of the time, he's with his foreign friends, who influenced his attitude greatly, and changed the way he sees things. When his father dies, he didn't go to his funeral. Long after he regrets that. He realises traditions and customs can't be ignored. He took on keen reading until he stumbled across l'étranger by Albert Camus, and started thinking and thinking,
-is death real?
-What is death?
He remembers l'étranger by Albert Camus, and how this French auther sees the main charecter's life, which ends with his death. The story leaves him with a question, what are the signs, the proofs of grief?
-Do they have to be social?
-Or is grief a private emotional state, enclosed in sacred secrecy?

The local wisdom carried within the common proverbs have a profound presence in the Egyptians' daily lives, and sometimes, the proverb becomes a mirror reflecting them, and their culture. CULTURE - Danse, un rêve sur scène
Un jeune homme s’endort dans un coin de la scène, une fois plongé en plein sommeil, les acteurs, ceux qui sont dans son rêve apparaissent. C’est ainsi que commence la performance théâtrale dirigée par Sherif el Morsi dans le cadre du Festival de Danse pour le Théâtre à l’Opéra du Caire.

Réveiller les espritsSherif El Morsi a débuté dans la Danse et le Théâtre en 2002 et a enchaîné depuis les expériences, notamment avec le danseur professionnel Mohamed Shafik en 2005. Sherif, artiste provocateur, impose des questions aux spectateurs sans donner de bribes de réponses, c’est aux gens de se réveiller dit-il, de sortir de leur ignorance en matière d’Art et de Culture. Cette attitude lui vaut autant de désapprobation que de remerciement.
"Short Feature Dream"
Le 9 juin, il présentait au Small Hall de l’Opéra, une performance basée sur un rêve. Un rêve, déstructuré par essence, dans lequel se croisent plusieurs histoires, plusieurs personnages, plusieurs cultures. Il y a un couple égyptien qui incarne l’amour impossible, et ce couple américano-égyptien qui s’entredéchire dans l’incompréhension. Également, des personnages isolés, tel un écrivain, une petite fille jouant à la poupée, et des danseurs, des musiciens, la chanteuse Rania, un Français qui nous livre un court texte sur les raisons pour lesquelles il aime l’Egypte... Tous interagissent ensemble, se juxtaposent. La subtilité des déplacements au centre de la scène, la musique permanente, les chants, et la lumière dirigée au feeling au gré de ce qui se passe sur scène, créent l’unicité du rêve.
L’Art de la PerformanceLa particularité d’une performance artistique est de laisser une grande place à l’improvisation. Ainsi, Sherif, bien qu’il ait eu une idée précise en tête, ne l’a pas dévoilée entièrement aux acteurs.Il les a rencontrés, observer dans l'improvisation, puis a tiré le meilleur d’eux-mêmes, sur la base d’une confiance mutuelle. Ce spectacle sans budget s’est, par conséquent, préparé bénévolement, et très peu de temps avant le Festival. Cette contrainte pratique est aussi l’occasion de relever le défi de l’urgence. Dans l’urgence, on ne peut pas tout théoriser, alors on y va au feeling. C’est étrange de voir à quel point cette stratégie sans stratagème, de la mise en scène, peut développer le naturel et l’émotion bien plus profondément qu’un spectacle parfaitement orchestré.

Un rôle inattendu
Ludivine Perrin, une jeune femme française au Caire depuis trois mois, qui évolue dans le milieu théâtral en France depuis dix ans, s’est laissée convaincre de participer à la performance dans le rôle de la petite fille en rouge qui joue avec des poupées et vient perturber par ses rires, ses petits cris, et ses déplacements incessants sur scène, les autres personnages. Malgré les différences d’école, de culture, et de langage, elle a relevé le défi . Rien de tout cela n’a été un obstacle pour elle, c’est le feeling et la confiance qui ont servi de guides. "L’ambiance était chaleureuse, donc mon intégration au groupe fut facile. J’ai travaillé avec plaisir, sans savoir vraiment dans quel but, mais j’avais confiance", confie t-elle. De plus, "Grâce à la simplicité de la mise en scène, chacun a pu garder sa personnalité, c’était Vrai , on n’a pas joué à faire !"

This year’s festival offers a fascinating lineup of rarely seen films fresh from the international festival circuit and, new for 2010, a series of FREE workshops for aspiring actors, directors and others seeking employment in Michigan’s film industry (see next item). Among the titles set to screen in the AANM Auditorium is Ajami, a 2010 Academy Award nominee in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The work of emerging filmmakers – winners of our inaugural Short Film Contest – is also featured. Le festival Corto Del MED se termine.

Les organisateurs ont remis, dimanche 27 avril à 18h, les prix des

films en compétition.
Le prix du jury a été décerné au réalisateur égyptien Sherif El Morsy pour son documentaire intitulé Sadness between the public and the private, qui traite de la réaction égyptienne face aux événements au Liban. Un bel hommage à ces deux pays dont les films étaient à l'honneur pour cette deuxième édition du festival. Les jurys ont notamment apprécié la liberté, la sincérité et l'audace du réalisateur qui a courageusement filmé une manifestation dans les rues du Caire et ont souligné l'efficacité et l'intelligence du propos. Le film a également été remarqué pour ses qualités d'image et de montage, ainsi que pour son intérêt esthétique et innovant.
